NEWS: A day at the beach for coastal and marine biodiversity! Together for the Protection of Marine Species and Coastal Dune Ecosystems, Joint SAMESEA–PREBIODUNES projects event

As part of the activities of the Thematic Cluster “Biodiversity and Natural Marine Habitat Conservation”, a joint outreach event was organized Sunday 5th July on the beach of Lido Conchiglie in the Gallipoli Municipality, by the PREBIODUNES and SAMESEA projects, bringing science closer to citizens, tourists, and local communities and inspiring collective action to protect our valuable coastal and marine ecosystems.

PREBIODUNES focuses on the development and testing of innovative solutions to protect dune biodiversity, addressing the growing challenges of coastal erosion and tourism pressure on these fragile and highly valuable habitats. SAMESEA, on the other hand, is dedicated to safeguarding three emblematic marine species, the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta), the common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), and the Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus), by promoting strategies that foster a shared monitoring framework and a sustainable coexistence between them and human activities.

Through interactive demonstrations, educational activities, and knowledge-sharing sessions, the two projects highlighted the vital role of biodiversity conservation, both on land and at sea. Participants had the opportunity to learn about the ecological importance of dune habitats, the threats faced by marine wildlife, and the actions that individuals and communities can take to contribute to their protection.

Healthy dunes, thriving marine species, and well-preserved coastal habitats are fundamental to the resilience of our ecosystems and the well-being of future generations. The event conveyed a clear and powerful message: protecting nature is a shared responsibility that requires the commitment of everyone, from researchers and policymakers to residents and visitors. By working together, we can create a more sustainable future where people and nature coexist in harmony, ensuring that our coastal and marine heritage continues to thrive for generations to come.

As PREBIODUNES and SAMESEA mentioned, they are working: “Together for biodiversity. Together for our future.”
