NEWS: SAMESEA Pilot Action Brings Experts Together in Montenegro
Montenegro Dolphin Research organized a two-day pilot action titled “Monitoring of Marine Sentinel Species and Human Activities Interaction in the Mediterranean Sea” within the framework of the SAMESEA, supported by the Interreg ADRION Programme, with the participation of over 40 participants. The event was hosted by the Maritime Faculty of Kotor and took place on October 28 and 29, 2025.
The pilot action brought together experts and stakeholders from across the Mediterranean to discuss and practice techniques for monitoring and conserving the region’s sentinel species. The event opened with a presentation by Dr. Aylin Akkaya from the MDR team, who emphasized the importance of regional monitoring efforts, the ecological role of sentinel species, and the main objectives of the SAMESEA project. Throughout the two-day program, participants attended sessions on monitoring and observation techniques, collaboration with fishermen, land- and boat-based surveying, citizen science initiatives (Marine Ranger), and response protocols for stranded marine animals.
On both days, practical demonstrations were conducted in Kotor Bay, where participants joined boat-based surveys, land-based monitoring exercises, and simulations of stranding events involving dolphins and sea turtles. These field activities helped strengthen regional capacity and harmonize monitoring protocols across the Adriatic and wider Mediterranean region.
Many thanks to all the participants and organizers for their dedication, collaboration, and valuable contributions to marine conservation efforts.
